Needs, practices and aspirations of Greater Geneva residents in terms of leisure mobility – What levers for a decarbonation of these mobilities?

Leisure has been the main reason for Swiss residents to travel for several decades. On this basis, the Canton of Geneva and the Grand Genève wish to better understand this mobility sector with the aim of being able to strengthen their strategy to reduce the environmental impact of transport.
To this end, they have turned to 6t, which proposes a three-step approach. Firstly, a detailed quantitative study of the leisure mobility sector, in its multiple dimensions: spatiality, detailed composition of motives, temporality, modes of transport, people’s profiles, etc., is to be carried out. By carrying out this diagnosis on a cross-border scale, it is possible to significantly refine the understanding of these types of mobility and thus enable the implementation of differentiated policies and solutions.

Quantitative diagnosis is essential, but it does not enable an understanding of the motivations and aspirations of people with regard to their leisure mobility. This is why 6t, following the diagnosis, is conducting a survey among the population of the Grand Genève, which should make it possible to fill these gaps, but which also aims to analyse the changes in behaviour induced by the health crisis of 2020 and their potential perpetuation.

Finally, on the basis of the quantitative and qualitative diagnosis, 6t is developing action strategies to reduce the environmental impact of leisure mobility, along three main lines:
• Reducing the number of trips and distances travelled
• Modal shift from carbon-intensive modes (plane and car) to less impacting modes, especially public transport
• Increase in vehicle efficiency, via the type of motorisation and the occupancy rate
