Due to their almost daily frequency and their constrained dimension, home-to-school commutes account for a significant volume of trips. However, contrary to home-to-work commutes, little is known about home-study mobility, especially when it comes to school children (primary and secondary education). It responds to very specific logics, since it is influenced by a multiplicity of factors such as spatial density of schools, public transport services, housholds’ motorization rates and also parent’s educational strategies and choices. Nevertheless, this mobility represents a key issue, since it can contribute to instill virtuous mobility practices from the earliest age, school children being future public transports users. Furthermore, the mobility of children between their home and school can influence their parents’ mobility: accompanying their children to school can indeed encourage some parents to use their car for the rest of the day. RATP Cap Île-de-France therefore wishes to gain a better understanding of the home-study mobility of school children, in order to provide a tailored service that suits the local demand in Île-de-France. 6t-bureau de recherche is supporting RATP Cap Île-de-France in this process, with a cartographic and typological approach, complemented with a qualitative survey using semi-directive interviews.
